Medical assisted treatment paired with support from therapist or peer support is best practices in treating certain substance use disorders. Some people need medication to support their recovery to decrease withdrawal symptoms, cravings and other biological issues as a person detoxes from substances including alcohol. In the biopsychosocial model of recovery care, addressing the biological needs is the first and arguably the most important step. Medication can keep the client alive, help them clear their minds from addiction and allow them to think clearly enough to start their recovery path.
